Waste Aware caravan wins award
The Echt Show's Best Trade Stand Award was won by Aberdeenshire Council's Waste Aware caravan on 12 July.
The touring caravan won as a result of the high standard of information delivered on subjects covering recycling and general green activities. The council sends the caravan around to local galas and shows to spread the environmentally friendly message of 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle'.
Area waste officer Mel Els, who helped staff the caravan, said: "I think the thing that really got the judges' attention was the home composting and green cone display, using the raw materials of kitchen and garden waste along with real compost."
The team also sought to promote the European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, which the local council is enforcing with new specialist recycling facilities.
The caravan stall was intended to give locals the opportunity to discuss recycling issues with council staff and raise any queries.
The caravan itself will next appear at the Banff and Macduff Farmers Market on 8th August, followed by the Tarland Show on the 9th.
