Travel insurance not just for trips abroad

Holiday makers are being encouraged to look carefully at travel cover policy benefits for all journeys away from home - not just jetting away to overseas destinations.

Holiday cancellations due to death, or an illness, claims for lost money, baggage or documents and medical emergencies involving costly medically-based transport back home can all occur within the UK as well as abroad.

Neil Laird, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Finance, said: "British people often holiday in the UK, whether it be their main get-away or a short break or long weekend.

"It can be easy to overlook travel insurance if you are not going on a foreign break but many of the problems that you can encounter abroad can also happen here in the UK on holiday, so it is important to ensure that you have adequate cover."

Sainsbury's travel insurance has found that there are 6.96 million, or 15 per cent of all Brits, who have never holidayed abroad in their lifetime. For campers and caravan and motorhome owners, who often enjoy the comforts of visiting other destinations within the UK, this is probably not much of a surprise.
