Specialists not so special
Motorists looking for the best car insurance deals are not necessarily better off with specialist insurers.
Price comparison website moneysupermarket.com says that drivers who opt for policies that specifically focus on certain sectors of the market, such as only women or the elderly, are not always necessarily the cheapest.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Women should not be swayed by female-friendly adverts for cheaper car insurance.
"Chances are they will be beaten on premiums by the bigger, better-known brands."
He added that although some of the specialists do sometimes offer freebies such as mobile phones, motorists need to weigh up the benefits as these providers can often be between 30 and 100 per cent higher then their mainstream equivalents.
Caravan owners are more aware than most of the need to shop around when it comes to buying insurance.
They not only have their vehicle to cover, but also their possessions, which could be damaged in an accident.
