No breakdown in assistance provision
Vehicle owners should plan for wintry conditions by making sure that their breakdown cover is up to date and that roadside assistance is a part of their policy, a price comparison site has urged.
As well as adding a list of relevant telephone numbers to the glove compartment, to be able to contact the right people in case of problems, drivers are asked to check that they have added a high visibility jacket, torch, reflective triangle, jump leads and a first aid kit to their car.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, advises: "Figures clearly show that as the nights draw in there is an uplift in the accident rate.
"Winter weather conditions only compound this danger as well as increasing the chances of car breakdown."
The risks of snaking in icy weather are well known to caravan and trailer owners, and so tyre pressures should be checked regularly, as well as driving to anticipate bad weather, other less experienced road users and sharp corners, thus avoiding harsh braking or acceleration.
