Home from home - but check your insurer agrees

Caravan and motorhome owners love the feeling of being at home in their travelling space, but the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is warning that the total value of items may exceed the small print conditions on the limit of items taken out from the home.

The cost of bicycles, games equipment and laptops can soon add up.

A spokeswoman from the ABI says: "When your caravan is in situ at the caravan site or outside your home, then the contents of the caravan would be covered by your home contents insurance, and when you're driving the caravan somewhere, then liability is covered on your motor insurance.

"Check your policy limits for individual items and, if you're taking stuff away that is more expensive than your policy limits, then get it listed - on either your specialist caravan policy or your home insurance policy.

"For the actual shell of the caravan, regardless of whether it's being towed - or whether it's [staying put] somewhere, that is specialist caravan insurance."

Following the spate of wintery weather recently, the ABI has said that flood damage will be covered under existing policies.ADNFCR-1193-ID-18443598-ADNFCR
