Government cycling initiative given funding boost
As a result of the 'Towards a Sustainable Transport System' document, the government has promised £140 million of investment in cycling initiatives.
Bikeability cycle training will be provided for half a million ten-year-olds before 2012.
'Safe links to schools' cycle routes will be offered to another 250 schools.
Ruth Kelly, the transport secretary, said: "Cycling brings many benefits, both for the individual in terms of health and fitness and for the local community as it helps tackle congestion and improve local air quality.
"Being able to cycle safely is an important life skill and I want to give more children the opportunity to do it and encourage more adults to reach for their bikes."
Phillip Darnton, chairman of Cycling England, said: "Cycling England has produced compelling evidence to show that increased and sustained levels of investment in cycling can make a substantial impact.
"The bicycle really does have a role in helping meet England's transport challenges. It is now taking its place as a proper mode of transport."
Caravan and motorhome owners are often keen outdoors explorers and many already understand the joy of experiencing the flexibility which cycling can provide.
