Drivers warned of fog danger
Fog is one of the most dangerous hazards for road users, RIAS Insurance has warned.
The meteorological office has issued warnings that high-pressure weather systems will cause fog this autumn, and so vehicle users should beware the sudden changes in road conditions.
Vehicle owners are encouraged to check that their windscreen wipers are in good condition, and to seek an eye test if they suspect that their vision is compromised.
This is especially important for anyone pulling a caravan or driving a motor home.
Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS, warns: "Despite possible mild weather conditions this winter, drivers still need to be aware that driving in foggy conditions, particularly at night, can carry its own risks.
"When severe weather hits such as snow or wind or rain storms we are far more likely to stay off the road.
"Driving in busy traffic on a clear day is challenging enough, but you should be extra careful when driving in fog as visibility can seriously deteriorate in a matter of minutes or metres."
The new edition of the Highway Code, published September 28th 2007, says that fog lights should only be used when visibility is seriously reduced, and that they should be switched off once visibility improves again.
