Connect2 cycling routes get cash boost
Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, which promotes the national cycle network, has received the most votes to benefit from a Lottery award as winner of 'The People's £50 million contest'.
Projects, including a road bridge for school children in Newtonabbey, Northern Ireland, a Scottish crossing linking communities either side of the River Tay and the re-instatement of the Blyth ferry in Northumberland, will all benefit from the funding.
The Caravan Club had urged all of its members to vote in support of the Sustrans bid.
John Grimshaw, from Sustrans, said: "We are immensely grateful to everyone who got behind Connect2 to make their votes count.
"It has confirmed our belief that people want to walk and cycle more when given the right surroundings."
Celebrities such as Lorraine Kelly, Alistair McGowan and Jon Snow all backed the campaign in support of Connect2.
