British drivers 'confused' by new road safety rules
Millions British drivers are confused by the latest road safety rules that form part of the Highway Code, according to research by Churchill Car Insurance.
A recent study established that two-thirds of British drivers go against the Highway Code by eating while behind the wheel and almost
85 per cent confessed to being unaware that playing load music went against the road safety rules.
In addition, around 47 per cent of those polled by Churchill said that they would feel that their safety was being compromised if the driver of a car they were travelling in was wearing inappropriate footwear, but these issues are not covered by the code.
"Drivers need to make sure that they know all the current rules of the Highway Code, otherwise they could find they are inadvertently breaking them," said Abi Clark, spokesperson for Churchill Car Insurance.
"Anything that distracts motorists from looking at the road, or prevents them from driving safely should be avoided at all costs so that accidents can be prevented," she added.
This news will come as a warning to caravan owners, who have a particularly strong interest in road safety.
Earlier this year, Churchill Car Insurance research concluded that icy weather costs British businesses around £38.8 million annually because of lateness resulting from cold-related car hold ups.
