Brigg caravan theft highlights need for insurance

The theft of an 18ft caravan from a haulage yard in Brigg, North Lincolnshire has highlighted the importance of adequate security measures and insurance cover for caravan owners.

Two thieves hitched up the caravan to a white minibus and drove off from the yard on Pegasus Road at between 20.50 and 21.45 on Thursday October 4th.

Home office figures, based on recorded thefts are startling.

Out of approximately 16,000 new touring caravan sales each year, a quarter will be stolen.

The Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme (CRIS) which is similar to the DVLA for cars, holds records of every new touring caravan sold since 1992 and has evidence showing over 10.000 caravan thefts. Only about 25 per cent of these are ever recovered.

Some of the 500,000 touring caravans in the UK are over 30 years old and, because of the vast numbers of models and manufacturers throughout Europe, tracing a stolen caravan can be hard.

Humberside Police say they would like to talk to anyone with any information about the theft in Brigg.
