Bomb on the beach leads to caravan park evacuation

When many caravan owners chose to stay at one of Scotland's most popular beaches they thought they had chosen an place famed for its beauty - not bombs.

However, a bomb is what turned up on the beach at Sandyhills on the Colvend Coast, five miles south of Dalbeattie.

Caravan owners were evacuated as bomb disposal experts were called in from Edinburgh to deal with the unexploded ordnance.

The shell was found by one of the caravan owners.

"One of the caravanners thought it was a tin or piece of metal at first but it turned out to be a shell," a spokesman for the caravan site told the BBC.

"The police were called in and the area cordoned off until bomb squad officers are brought in from Edinburgh."
