Bad driving 'wastes £2.2bn of fuel'

The RAC calculates that bad driving practices are adding up to the equivalent of 267 Olympic-sized swimming pools, or £2.2 billion, in wasted petrol and diesel each year.

The motoring organisation said that planning routes so that drivers don't get lost, and don't end up touring round too proud to ask for directions, could add up to a saving of £100 per year.

Other ways to save cash are to ensure that tyres are correctly inflated, and to watch that the rev counter doesn't creep up too high - meaning that the wrong gear has been selected.

David Bizley, RAC's technical director, comments: "With fuel prices at a record high, adopting eco driving techniques is an easy way for consumers to reduce their fuel consumption to help purses, wallets and the environment.

"We hope that by raising awareness of the simple changes motorists can make to their driving style, they will be able to absorb some of the increasing cost of fuel through their own driving habits."

The RAC also says that modern engines do not need to be "warmed up", and that anticipating road conditions by only braking or accelerating hard in an emergency will all cut down on exhaust emissions.

Finally, by removing top boxes, cycle carrier and heavy luggage once they have been used, caravan owners can take advantage of the aerodynamic styling on their towing vehicles.ADNFCR-1193-ID-18479876-ADNFCR
